Once you have registered your card then shopping using Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode is quick and easy. If a retailer has not yet introduced these services you can continue to shop online exactly as before – with no changes to the process.
When shopping online both MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa work in an identical manner. If you are shopping at a retailer that has introduced these services you still select your goods as you have always done. Typically you place items into your shopping basket and when finished press checkout.
The actual information that each retailer asks when you go through the checkout process can vary slightly, though as you reach the end of the transaction you are generally prompted to enter your payment details. Here you will be usually asked for the following information:
- Payment method (such as Visa credit card, MasterCard credit card, Maestro card)
- Your credit or debit card number
- The expiry date of the card
- The card security number (the last 3 digits on the back of the card, next to the signature panel) and
- Your billing address and postcode
After you have entered these details the retailer’s system will check with the banks to see if your card has been enrolled for MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa. If the card is registered then a secure link is established with the bank. Your bank will display the personal assurance message that you set-up when initially registering for the MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa service. You should check for this message before entering your registered password.
Once you have successfully entered your password your purchase will be complete and you should receive a confirmation message. As you have seen with Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode, shopping online remains convenient and straightforward.
